PF Releases

Resolved: In a democracy, civil disobedience is an appropriate weapon in the fight for justice.

Foreword: The NFL stated that “while the structure of the January topic differs slightly from previous Public Forum Topics, it was chosen because of its modern relevance and historical gravity.” Well they’re one for two at least; it should be a relatively interesting month of debate. The arguments presented draw from the works of past civil disobedience leaders, philosophers, and lawyers. The most famous practitioners of civil disobedience, Jesus, Thoreau, Ghandi, and King, are the best sources you’ll ever get to use in a Forum round. Nonetheless the Con’s grounds for debate derive from the “in a democracy,” clause. If you want to do well this month, you need to take the muddled philosophical musings on civil disobedience and transform them into strong, analytical arguments.

If you have any questions on the files or need help with your case, e-mail me at Michelle@finalistfiles.com or send a Facebook Message to Michelle Schmit. I also encourage you to join the “Public Forum Debate” Facebook group. The group already has an extensive discussion on this month’s topic, mostly about how to define the terms. It will give you a good idea of what arguments other debaters may run in-round. Good Luck!
