January 2009: Europe
Foreword: Many are worried about how our country will handle the hard times coming from an international recession. Key to uncovering that mystery is partially examining how our allies are weathering the storm. In the international community today, we find the vast majority of our allies are in Europe. Understanding their affairs and difficulties will be critical to determining the outlook of the global community in the future. First, we will examine the principles of the Euro. With upcoming economic problems, it is key to understand how the Euro works and will react. We will also examine Russia's most recent gas conflict. With energy being a huge part of the global economy, we need to understand how the energy powers are functioning. Next, we'll look at the riots in Greece, which many believe to be an externality of the recession. Finally, we will examine Turkey's attempts to join the European Union, which are going to be determined in the next couple years.
