Resolved: When in conflict, the United Nations should prioritize global poverty reduction over environmental protection.

Foreword: This topic is a struggle. The two areas studied, “poverty” and the “environment,” could not be more broad. It is important to focus on the relationship between poverty and the environment in building your case. The fact that the actor in the resolution is the United Nations doesn’t seem to weigh too much on the debate. What matters the most is weighing the two priorities and making short term versus long term distinctions. There is a lot of evidence on the linkages between poverty and environment. My advice to you is to worry less about quantity and more about quality.

As always, if you have any questions, e-mail me at You can also send a Facebook message to “Michelle Renee Schmit” or write on the “Public Forum Debate” Facebook wall. Good Luck this month. The topic leaves a lot of room for creativity so take advantage!
